The “Summer School – Acid Mine Drainage and REE contamination mitigation”, organized by the IST – Instituto Superior Técnico, in the context of the research project PANORAMA – “European training Network on Rare Earth environmental elements transfer: from rock to human” (funded by the framework program Horizonte 2020 – H2020-MSCA-ITN-2019), of which EDM-Empresa de Desenvolvimento Mineiro is a partner, included the Life Ribermine Project, through a field trip to the Lousal Pilot Project.
This technical visit took place on May 25th, 2022, and was attended by several international stakeholders, including members of Universities, Partners and PhD Scholars who carry out their research work on this topic.

During the Summer School, on the 24th and 25th of May, respectively, former mines of the Iberian Pyrite Belt (Alentejo, Portugal), the São Domingos mine (Mértola) and the Lousal mine (Grândola), where EDM carried out minimization of the impacts of metallic mining and the phenomenon of Acid Mining Drainage and environmental recovery, were visited. EDM focused on the Bioremediation System implemented in the former Lousal mine (between 2010 and 2014), downstream of the area recently restored by LIFE RIBERMINE, the Lousal Pilot Project. Technicians from the LIFE RIBERMINE Project explained its objectives and the work carried out in situ.
This was another privileged occasion for the exchange of ideas and the dissemination of knowledge between specialists, the entities present and all the participants.
